Why Iran Was Invaded by the Allies in World War II?

In the summer of 1941, despite its neutrality in World War II, Iran was invaded by Great Britain and the Soviet Union during Operation Countenance. Within days, Iranian resistance was broken. Shah Reza Pahlavi was forced to abdicate and his son Mohammad Reza Pahlavi became the new ruler. The country was then divided into a British sphere of influence in the oil-rich south and a Soviet sphere of influence in the north. The Allies justified the invasion on the grounds of the close economic ties between Iran and Nazi Germany and, above all, wanted to secure the strategic “Persian Corridor” to supply the Soviet Union. After the war, the Soviet Union initially refused to withdraw its troops and supported separatist movements in northern Iran. Under pressure from the United States and Great Britain, Joseph Stalin finally withdrew his troops in 1946. The crisis is seen by some historians as one of the first confrontations of the Cold War and had long-lasting political consequences for Iran.
