In the Grisons, the trains are mainly metre gauge and operated by the Rhätischebahn. With the famous Bernina Express, it is possible to go from over 2000 metres altitude with the mountains to below 500 metres with palm trees all the way to Italy. To allow for such a steep descent, a gradient of 70 per 1000 is necessary, and in Brusio there is even a helical viaduct. Here, the trains running in August 2025 are exclusively using ‘Allegra’ ABe 8/12 for the R19, RE9 and Bernina Express from Tirano in Italy to St. Moritz in Switzerland, and for some of the Bernina Express, they change direction in Pontresina to take the Albula line to Chur.
