The disrespect, the entitlement, the inability to sit through a lesson without checking out. Educators are putting it on record publicly and saying this generation is unlike anything they've managed before. But there's a counter-narrative gaining traction too. That teachers today are less equipped to handle a difficult room than previous generations of educators were. That the shift toward softer classroom management, away from real consequences and clear authority, has left some teachers without the tools to actually control what's happening in front of them. So which is it. Are the kids the problem, or has something changed about how classrooms are being run that's making a manageable situation feel unmanageable. The uncomfortable answer might be both. Gen Alpha genuinely is growing up differently — more stimulated, less patient, with less experience navigating boredom or authority. And at the same time, classroom culture has shifted in ways that don't always set teachers up to meet that head on. I've worked with thousands of families from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
