Take a Walk with Me | Early Electric Blues on the Seal Beach Pier | Robert Lockwood Jr.
A beautiful Friday afternoon on the Seal Beach Pier, with the largest crowd I've seen down there in quite some time. Between the weekly Farmers Market and the holiday weekend, the pier was packed with people enjoying the sunshine, the ocean, and a little early electric blues. Joining me are Adam Mumea on our custom compact, low-volume drum kit and the newest member of the group, Logan Davis on harmonica. Logan is playing through a Pignose Hog20, while I'm playing my Gretsch Gin Rickey through another Pignose Hog20, with vocals through a vintage Turner 22D microphone into the same amplifier. This performance is our interpretation of "Take a Walk with Me," first recorded by Robert Lockwood Jr. in 1941. It's one of Lockwood's most celebrated early recordings and beautifully illustrates the musical bridge between the Delta blues tradition and the sophisticated guitar style that would later become one of the cornerstones of early Chicago electric blues. Rather than recreating the original recording note for note, we approach the song through the musical language of the late 1940s and early 1950s, combining Lockwood's elegant chord movement, melodic phrasing, and rhythmic sensibility with an ensemble approach rooted in dynamics, conversation, and restraint. Guitar, harmonica, vocals, and drums each have their role, supporting one another while leaving plenty of room for the music to breathe. Early Electric Blues • 1937–1953 My approach is subtraction. Not changing the music... but stripping it back to what made it work in the first place. So it can breathe again. — Mark Mumea #EarlyElectricBlues #SealBeachPier #ChicagoBlues #RobertLockwoodJr #TakeAWalkWithMe #DeltaBlues #GretschGinRickey #Pignose #BluesHarmonica #TraditionalBlues #LiveBlues #RootsMusic #MarkMumea #LetTheBluesBreatheAgain
