Early Electric Blues on the Seal Beach Pier | Live Concert | 25 Songs • 1937–1953
A beautiful Friday afternoon on the Seal Beach Pier, with the largest crowd we've seen down there in quite some time. Between the weekly Farmers Market and the holiday weekend, the pier was packed with people enjoying the sunshine, the ocean, and a little early electric blues. This performance also marks our first public performance as a trio. With only two rehearsals together, Logan Davis joined Adam Mumea and me to explore the music that defines this project—Early Electric Blues • 1937–1953. It was a great afternoon, and we're excited to continue building this project together. Our approach is rooted in dynamics, space, and conversation—allowing the guitar, harmonica, vocals, and drums to support one another rather than compete for attention. Rather than recreating these classic recordings note for note, we draw from the musical language of the era while adding our own personalities, always striving to remain faithful to the spirit of the music. Equipment Used Mark Mumea Gretsch Gin Rickey Pignose Hog20 Turner 22D (vocals) Logan Davis Harmonica & vocals Pignose Hog20 Adam Mumea Custom compact, low-volume drum kit The repertoire centers on the music of the early electric blues era (1937–1953), featuring the recordings of Robert Lockwood Jr., Jimmy Rogers, Little Walter, Muddy Waters, Floyd Jones, Baby Face Leroy Foster, Willie Love, Leroy Carr, Tampa Red, Johnny Jones, and others. While a handful of selections extend just beyond that period, every performance is approached through the musical language, ensemble playing, and aesthetic that defined the formative years of early electric blues. Everything you hear is performed with small amplifiers, low stage volume, and an emphasis on dynamics, restraint, and interaction—the qualities that made this music so expressive and continue to inspire our approach today. Early Electric Blues • 1937–1953 My approach is subtraction. Not changing the music... but stripping it back to what made it work in the first place. So it can breathe again. — Mark Mumea TIMESTAMPS 0:05 – That's All Right — Jimmy Rogers (Robert Lockwood Jr.) 3:41 – Goin' Away Baby — Jimmy Rogers 7:30 – Stockyard Blues — Floyd Jones 11:06 – Red Headed Woman — Baby Face Leroy Foster 13:56 – Love Her with a Feeling — Tampa Red 18:45 – Mean Red Spider — Robert Lockwood Jr. 22:38 – Bad Actin' Woman — Little Walter 27:35 – Mumea Boogie (Original) 30:35 – My Head Can't Rest No More — Baby Face Leroy Foster 34:12 – Lockwood Boogie (Original) 36:47 – Take a Walk with Me — Robert Lockwood Jr. 42:04 – Shady Lane — Leroy Carr (Willie Love / Arkansas inspired) 46:07 – Playhouse — Floyd Jones 49:05 – Just Keep Lovin' Her — Little Walter 53:08 – Money, Marbles and Chalk — Jimmy Rogers 57:54 – V-8 Ford Blues — Willie Love 1:02:23 – Instrumental in the Style of Sad Hours — Little Walter 1:08:23 – Prison Bound — Leroy Carr 1:13:27 – Ludella — Jimmy Rogers 1:17:21 – Can't Hold Much Longer — Little Walter 1:21:30 – Goin' Down Slow — St. Louis Jimmy 1:25:56 – Fool No More — Eddie Hope 1:31:04 – Long Distance Call — Muddy Waters 1:35:50 – Dark Road — Floyd Jones 1:40:36 – Shelby County — Johnny Jones If you enjoy the music and would like to dive deeper into the guitar styles that shaped this era, be sure to explore my Early Electric Blues Lesson Series here on YouTube.
