Mysterious Olympic Artifact from Berlin 1939 | WWII Battlefield Find

This lighter witnessed the Berlin Olympic Games and later survived World War II. The body is engraved with the Olympic rings, the word “Berlin,” and the date “1939.” Judging by its construction and overall appearance, it looks very much like a handmade piece or trench art rather than a factory-produced lighter. Most likely, this was a one-of-a-kind item. It was found in Ukraine with a metal detector on World War II positions. The two main parts were lying separately, but close to each other. Most likely, the connection failed either because of intense heat or simply from spending decades underground. Who this lighter originally belonged to remains a mystery. It may have belonged to a German soldier who went through the war. Or perhaps it was made by an enthusiast craftsman as a souvenir sold during the Berlin Olympic Games. During the restoration, I deliberately chose not to remove the traces of time. Instead, I enhanced its age with a cabinet patina to preserve its character, charm, and history.
