What a Carpathian Family of 7 Eats After Moving a GIANT Haystack by Hand

What does a Carpathian family of seven eat after moving a giant haystack by hand? On this summer day, the family rakes fresh-cut grass into a huge rounded stack, moves it across the field on long wooden poles, and stores the hay in their barn. Only then do they wash and gather around the table for smoked split-pea soup and fresh homemade bread. The bread is made with flour, water and fresh yeast, shaped by hand and baked in a traditional tiled wood-fired oven. For the soup, yellow split peas and smoked pork simmer in a large pot before potatoes, bay leaves, fried onions, grated carrot, smoked sausage and fresh herbs are added. The day also includes feeding the chickens and pig, gathering firewood and working together in the hay field. At the end, all seven family members pray before sharing the meal they prepared.
