It is the capital of the Ripollés region and is located at the confluence of the Ter rivers and their tributary Freser, in the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees. Its origins can be found around the foundation of the Monastery of Santa María, ordered to be built by Wifredo el Velloso, an important cultural center during the Middle Ages. In this monastery an important task of writing manuscripts was developed, among which three Bibles stand out, currently in the Vatican museum. The county town of Ripoll is called "the bressol de Catalunya", the cradle of Catalonia, since it is said that Count Wifredo el Velloso founded Catalonia here. It was an important metallurgical center (forging, nails, weapons, sand castings), which turned towards the textile industry in the 19th century, taking advantage of the waters of the River Ter. Later it became an important crossing point for industrial railways, with the line from Ripoll to San Juan de las Abadesas, and from Ripoll to Ribas de Freser, which finally reaches Puigcerdá and Latour-de-Carol (France). As a result, it preserves an important railway heritage. Ripoll was also one of the towns where anarchism took root more strongly in Catalonia and a very powerful union of the CNT was consolidated in the first decades of the 20th century.
