Professor Lee Ki-dong is an Orientalist who served as Dean of the Graduate School of Sungkyunkwan University. After completing his undergraduate and graduate studies at Sungkyunkwan University, he studied at the University of Tsukuba in Japan. He then served as a professor in the Department of Oriental Philosophy at Sungkyunkwan University, a researcher at National Chengchi University in Taiwan and the Harvard Yenching Institute in the United States, and Dean of the College of Confucian Studies at Sungkyunkwan University. He recently published a five-volume compilation of "5,000 Years of Confucianism" (published by Sungkyunkwan University Press). This extensive work was made possible by Kim Jae-eok, a trustee of the Haseo Foundation, which honors Kim In-hu, one of the Eighteen Sages of Korea, who requested, "The foundation will support the writing of a comprehensive compilation of '5,000 Years of Confucianism.'" It is significant that the Haso Foundation selected him among numerous Confucian scholars to organize the Confucian thought and history of China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam in a clear manner, but the emergence of this ‘5,000 Years of Confucianism’ served as an opportunity to open up a new perspective. Rather than repeating the view that Confucianism is a Chinese discipline, this book opens up a new perspective that the Korean people are the main subjects of Confucianism and Oriental studies. In particular, he argues that the origin of Confucianism, the axis of East Asian values, is not China, but the region where the ancient Dongyi people lived. He had already published a commentary on ‘Hwandan Gogi’ three years ago. "Hwandan Gogi," which contains the ancient history and philosophy of the Korean people, including Dangun, is a book that mainstream historians consider a forgery and taboo, making scholars reluctant to mention it for fear of being labeled pseudo-scholars. Yet, the fact that he, one of the most prominent Eastern philosophers, published a book on it is no ordinary feat. It offers a glimpse into his unwavering nature. He confesses that while reading "Hwandan Gogi," which he himself had only heard about and considered taboo, and had ignored, he had the astonishing experience of having his students read it together at a study group. The questions he had been struggling with for decades as a scholar, about Confucianism and philosophy, were instantly resolved.
