The Founding Fathers of the Army Rangers

In 1942, the first U.S. Army Rangers were activated, working alongside English counterparts to fight in World War II. This was in keeping with a long line of American Ranger history, which, long before the inception of the first Ranger units, got their start in wars that involved English colonists, and to some extent, the American Revolution as well. The first Ranger unit in World War II was commanded by Col. William Darby, but before he was born, and even before his country was born, 2 other men paved the way for the unit and their famous tactics. Both of these forefathers were from New England, and both were from different generations who fought in different conflicts. They had different circumstances, different enemies and allies, but they used similar tactics and technology over a 100-year timeframe, and paved the way for the U.S. Army Rangers of today.
