Your Anxiety Isn't a Personality Trait
I was eating dinner alone at the bar of my favorite spot recently when two women sat down next to me. Within minutes I heard one say her heart was racing at 3 AM over a presentation. The other matched her and went further: forty inbox checks over one email to leadership. They weren't looking for solutions. They were bonding over the anxiety itself. The suffering had become the connection. Somewhere along the way we started treating chronic anxiety like a personality trait, the same way we'd say we're a morning person. I spent 30+ years in corporate America watching people wear their exhaustion like a credential. Anxiety is a signal from your nervous system. It was never meant to be who you are. In this episode I take apart the story we tell ourselves about anxiety at work. How we confused being anxious with being responsible, what chronic anxiety actually does to your judgment and your body, and how to build space between what you feel and how you respond. ➔ Why I stopped participating in the conversation where everyone competes over who's most overwhelmed ➔ What I've watched anxiety do to smart people's judgment, and how it pulls you out of strategic thinking ➔ The space between stimulus and response, and why I think that's where your power actually lives ➔ How I coach clients to tell the difference between reacting and choosing ➔ When the anxiety is yours to work through, and when it's accurate information about your environment I'm not telling you to stop caring or to lower your standards. I'm telling you the anxiety isn't doing the work you think it's doing. It isn't protecting you and it isn't proof of your commitment. It's learned. And what's learned can be examined and changed. When you work yourself into a knot before a hard conversation, is the worry actually helping you prepare, or just running on a loop? Tell me in the comments.
