Reality Is Not What You See — What Neuroscience and the Buddha Both Found About Perception

You believe you are looking at the world right now. You're not. You are looking at your brain's best guess about the world. In his 2017 TED talk, the neuroscientist Anil Seth said it plainly: "We're all hallucinating all the time. When we agree about our hallucinations, we call it reality." The Buddha, investigating the same territory with a different instrument, used a different word — a mirage. One gives you an fMRI study. The other gives you a practice. This is THE MEETING POINT — the series where neuroscience and the Buddha examine the same territory. Episode 1: Perception. In this video: • Seth’s controlled-hallucination thesis (TED 2017 — attribution fixed) • Helmholtz 1867 as historical anchor • Friston/Free Energy Principle: one paragraph, no formalism; Colombo & Wright unfalsifiability caveat documented • Top-down predictions and prediction error • Classic demonstrations: McGurk effect; The Dress (57% white/gold, 30% black/blue, 11% both, 2% other — exact statistics); Ames room; rubber hand • Color claim and its limits • Critics named: Chalmers hard problem; Colombo & Wright; Tallis; enactivists • [SN 22.95] Saññā = mirage (Ṭhānissaro exact text) • Bodhi commentarial gloss labeled • [MN 43] Saññā passage "blue, yellow, red, white" (NOT MN 44 — corrected; Mahāvedalla Sutta) • [MN 18] Papañca chain: Ṭhānissaro "objectification" vs Bodhi "proliferation" — both stated, neither adjudicated • [AN 4.49] Four inversions (vipallāsa) • Vedanānupasannā and kāyānupasannā as "the gap between labeling and raw sensation" • Varela/Thompson/Rosch "The Embodied Mind" (1991) as documented historical convergence • Science = mechanism. Buddhism = consequence + practice. • Close: mirage verse. "The neuroscientist asks how the mirage is made. The contemplative asks what to do once you know." • End card: "Ep. 1 — non-sequential release." Ep. 3 = Video #32, Ep. 4 = Video #4 ─────────── THE MEETING POINT is a 10-episode series examining where neuroscience and Buddhist teaching encounter the same territory. Non-sequential release — each episode stands alone.
