From Kenya to Japan: Newton Malala’s Journey from Akita University to a Career in Tokyo
In this episode of From Africa, With Purpose, we meet Newton Malala from Kenya, an Akita University graduate now working in Tokyo in Japan’s renewable energy industry. Newton came to Japan in 2016 and spent five years at Akita University, completing his master’s and PhD studies. Today, he works with systems that monitor solar power plants. One of the most memorable parts of his story is that his home in Kenya first received electricity when he was 22. Years later, he is now working in Japan’s solar energy field — a journey that connects his personal experience with his professional path. Newton also shares practical advice for international students who hope to work in Japan. He talks about starting job hunting early, improving Japanese language skills, understanding yourself, and learning how Japanese companies hire and train fresh graduates. This episode is about studying abroad, building a career in Japan, renewable energy, and creating your own path.
