On Friday, July 10, 2006, Mali announced the return of its ambassador to Algeria and the resumption of his duties, after having recalled him for consultations in April 2005. Mali also announced the reopening of its airspace to all types of flights to and from Algeria. Algeria reciprocated, with the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announcing the return of Ambassador Kamal Ratib to Bamako to resume his duties as of Friday, July 10, 2006. The Algerian Ministry of Defense also announced that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had ordered the reopening of the airspace and the return of the Algerian ambassador to Bamako, in the interest of maintaining friendly relations, the long shared history, and cooperation between the two countries. Relations between Mali and Algeria had been strained after the Algerian army shot down a Malian drone that had violated Algerian airspace on April 1, 2005. This prompted a protest from the military regime in Bamako, which recalled its ambassador for consultations. Algeria then reciprocated by recalling its ambassador. The holding company compounded the situation by announcing the closure of its airspace to Mali and to all aircraft arriving from or departing to Mali, placing Mali in an unenviable position.
