The United Nations' overall Human Development Index (HDI) report for 2026 ranked Algeria third in Africa, a significant improvement over its previous ranking. The HDI is based on a wide range of variables, including economic, social, and health-related factors. It relies heavily on the availability of health services and healthcare, school enrollment rates, education expenditure, and illiteracy rates. It also considers the impact of health indicators on life expectancy at birth, as well as the availability and distribution of electricity and the extent of electricity grid coverage. These conditions have improved significantly in Algeria recently, propelling it to third place in Africa in the HDI. Seychelles ranked first, while Mauritius came in second. Algeria was among the top ten countries after other Arab nations, including Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia, along with other countries in the Southern African region such as South Africa.
