のぞいてみたい キツツキの巣の中 アオゲラ編

The forests around here are mainly home to three species of woodpeckers: the Great Spotted Woodpecker, the Japanese Green Woodpecker, and the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. The Japanese Green Woodpecker has a dark green body and is a bit wary, so the only way to observe it properly is to wait in front of its nest. In resort areas, wooden exterior walls are often subjected to the ordeal of Japanese green woodpeckers (holes being dug). Japanese green woodpeckers often use living trees when building their nests, and they spend a considerable amount of time digging their nest holes. Like the Great Spotted Woodpecker, woodpeckers, both males and females, build nests and raise their young. After the chicks have left the nest, the parents have to go to where the chicks are and feed them, so when there are many chicks in different locations, feeding them all becomes a really big job. To prevent the nests from being abandoned, I kept the time spent photographing them to a minimum and took the utmost care. I am relieved to have confirmed that the chicks successfully fledged in both of my photography sessions with the Great Spotted Woodpecker and the Japanese Green Woodpecker.
