The Roof Edge Was Rotting from the Inside—So I Rebuilt It | Japanese Carpenter

Hello, I’m Kazu Murata. On the first day of exterior work on this 37-year-old light-gauge steel-framed house in Japan, I noticed that part of the rake board was coming loose. When I opened it up, I found deteriorated sealant, rotten wood, damaged rafters, and even nails that had pierced the flashing beneath the roof edge. The exterior work had already begun, so there was no time to stop and think for long. I had to decide on the spot how far the repair should go, quickly rebuild the backing, add waterproofing, and get everything ready for painting. Ideally, I would have removed a much larger section and rebuilt the entire roof edge. This time, however, I carried out the best repair possible within the limits of the cost, schedule, existing condition, and available materials. In renovation work, fixing what is damaged is not always the hardest part. Sometimes, the most difficult decision is how far the repair should go. This video shows the problems we found on a real job site, the decisions made along the way, and the repair work from a carpenter’s point of view. ◆ Previous Video Rain Kept Getting In—So I Turned This Back Door Into a Wall | Japanese Carpenter    • Rain Kept Getting In—So I Turned This Back...   ◆ Japanese Channel    / @re6725   ◆ Japanese Power Tools Channel    / @むらたかず工具店   ◆ Instagram   / kazuyuki.murata   ◆ Contact [email protected]
