Years of Leaks Left This Japanese Roof Twisted and Nearly Beyond Repair

Hello, I’m Kazu. This is Part 2 and the final episode of a roof repair project after years of recurring leaks. In the previous episode, we completely removed the old roof. This time, we rebuild the rafters, install the new roof sheathing and underlayment, and complete the metal roofing. However, the old structure was far more distorted than expected. The beams and purlins were out of alignment, the rafter heights did not match, and the plywood joints would not land on the framing. We had to decide, step by step, what could be corrected and what needed to be adjusted to the existing shape of the house. The working conditions were also difficult, with very little space between the neighboring buildings and constant movement through the scaffolding. Even so, Shimizu and I completed the roof framing and waterproofing. Afterward, a sheet-metal roofer installed the metal roof and finished the valley. We also covered a leak-prone wall section with sheet metal. The rusted roof we used as a work platform was also repainted, and both roofs received a full three-coat system. After many years, the leak has finally been stopped. This video shows not only the finished result, but also the difficult decisions and the moments when the work did not go as planned.
