You can feel it through your shoes, the day's heat coming back up out of the ground, and ahead of you the farmhouse has gone the color of butter in the last of the light. New England does this in the evening. It softens. The yellow clapboard glows like it's lit from the inside and you stop walking because something in your chest wants you to. You stay at the edge of the kitchen garden. It's all here. The tomatoes hanging fat and red on their stakes, the cabbages low and silver-green, a scarecrow leaning a little, keeping watch over nothing. Sunset light pours across the vegetable rows and turns the dust in the air to gold. Past the field there's a red barn going dark against the hills, and the hills are turning that deep blue they only turn right before night, and you are exactly nowhere you need to be. You listen. Birdsong. The kind that only happens now, at the very end of things, when the day birds are saying the last of what they have to say. The wind chimes by the porch catch a gentle breeze and answer them, slow and sweet, and that's it. That's the whole sound of this place. No music. Nothing playing. Just the chimes and the birds and, underneath, so quiet you almost miss them, the first crickets warming up in the long grass. You told yourself you'd pick the tomatoes. You haven't. You're just standing here while the golden hour does what it does, while the basket stays empty on the grass and the whole farm garden goes slow and amber and kind. And nobody's calling you in. Nobody needs the rows finished tonight. This is the slow living people talk about and never quite reach, and somehow you've walked straight into the middle of it. So stay. The light is in no rush. The chimes keep their gentle time and the crickets rise and the farmhouse holds its warmth, and whatever you carried up this path, you can set it down now. Right here.
