The plot of Mafia III indirectly continues the story of Mafia II, but, like the second game in the series, it is not directly related to the first part. The developer was Hangar 13 (a newly formed 2K studio), while 2K Czech (part of Hangar 13 since 2017) had only a limited involvement in the game's creation. Development of Mafia III began shortly after the release of Mafia II, but 2K Czech, the developer of the first installments in the series, underwent a restructuring, and most of its staff was transferred to the company's new studio, Hangar 13. Having decided to recreate New Orleans in 1968, the development team drew on previous projects in the franchise and designed the game with a new protagonist, Lincoln Clay, to replicate the basic structure of its predecessors. Much of the development focused on creating an open world, and several members of the development team visited Louisiana to shoot footage for the design team. The soundtrack for Mafia III includes several licensed songs written by various musicians living at the time.[4] Upon release, the game received mixed reviews, with praise for its story, characters, darker themes, and soundtrack. However, some gameplay mechanics and technical issues drew criticism.[5] The game was a commercial success, selling seven million copies worldwide, the highest figure in the series.[6] On May 19, 2020, 2K Games released Mafia III: Definitive Edition, which included all downloadable content for the game. This version, along with previous games, was later included in the Mafia: Trilogy bundle, released on September 25, 2020.[
