During development, much of the original 2K Czech team joined the newly formed Hangar 13 studio. Inspired by 1968 New Orleans, the developers created the fictional city of New Bordeaux, capturing the atmosphere, music, culture, and social tensions of the era. The team even traveled to Louisiana to gather reference material for the game's world and environments. The game features an outstanding licensed soundtrack packed with iconic songs from the 1960s, helping bring its setting to life. Although Mafia III received mixed reviews at launch—earning praise for its story, characters, mature themes, and soundtrack while being criticized for repetitive gameplay and technical issues—it became the best-selling game in the Mafia series, selling over seven million copies worldwide. On May 19, 2020, Mafia III: Definitive Edition was released, including all previously released DLC. It later became part of the Mafia: Trilogy collection, released on September 25, 2020.
