'Making art is how I understand the world' | Austin Lee Timestamp
Born in Las Vegas and based in Brooklyn, New York, Austin Lee is a painter known for combining traditional painting with digital technologies, creating vibrant, dreamlike images that explore memory, perception, consciousness, and contemporary life. For more than two decades, Lee has developed a distinctive visual language that merges airbrushed painting, digital drawing, virtual reality, 3D modeling, and animation, resulting in works that feel both familiar and strangely unreal. In this studio visit, Austin reflects on growing up alongside the rise of personal computers, teaching himself digital tools, studying painting at Tyler School of Art, and developing a practice that bridges digital image-making with the history of painting. His work explores how technology shapes the way we see, remember, and connect with one another, while remaining deeply rooted in the emotional and human aspects of visual communication. Throughout the conversation, Austin discusses consciousness, creativity, teaching, color, digital culture, artificial intelligence, memory, and the evolving role of painting in a world saturated with images. For him, art is ultimately a way of sharing inner experience with others. "Art is one of the only ways to understand consciousness through other people," he explains. Through luminous color, invented spaces, and emotionally charged figures, Austin creates paintings that invite viewers into a world that feels at once personal, collective, and timeless. -- Explore more of Austin Lee's work here: Instagram: / austinleee Website: https://kostyal.com/artists/austin-lee/ -- Filmed and produced by Timestamp - documenting artists, ideas, and creative lives around the world.
