'Making things is the antidote to the world falling apart' | Mason Dowling Timestamp

Mason Dowling is an abstract painter originally from northern New Mexico, now based in New York, whose work explores perception, memory, and material transformation through layered processes of drawing, cutting, and painting. Raised in a family where making was a primary form of communication, Dowling developed an intuitive relationship to craft early on, from building furniture to drawing obsessively. His practice today reflects that same sensibility, blending physical labor, experimentation, and sensitivity to environment into paintings that feel both constructed and discovered. In this conversation, Dowling reflects on the deeper impulse behind his work, describing art-making as a response to disorder and fragmentation in the world. As he puts it, “making things in a way is like the antidote to that… making batteries that store up what’s good in life and preserve it.” His process is rooted in intuition rather than rigid intention, allowing meaning to emerge over time rather than forcing it from the outset. “The ideas that I end up putting on the work often aren’t really where the work comes from,” he says, emphasizing a practice guided by instinct, patience, and reflection. Dowling’s unique technique begins with drawing, often using simple tools like pencil on paper, before evolving into a physical process of cutting, layering, and transferring forms onto surfaces using paint and stencils. This method creates a sense of distance between the artist and the final image, allowing unexpected results to surface. He describes this moment of revelation as central to the work, where the painting exists “outside my vision and my touch” until it is finally uncovered. Through this push and pull of control and chance, his paintings accumulate history, sometimes consisting of dozens of layers that transform surface into light. Much of Dowling’s work is influenced by his upbringing in the landscapes of the American West, where experiences of isolation, nature, and environmental change continue to shape his visual language. His paintings carry traces of erosion, fire, growth, and transformation, reflecting both beauty and instability. At the same time, his work is deeply tied to community and shared experience. He notes that being an artist is not only about individual practice but also about participation, saying it is important to “go out and support the communities that are there and help increase them and participate in them.” Ultimately, Dowling is driven by the pursuit of newness and discovery within his work. Each painting becomes an opportunity to encounter something previously unknown, both for himself and for the viewer. “Each piece, when it’s successful, is a new sort of feeling… something that I’ve never felt before,” he explains. By embracing uncertainty, experimentation, and vulnerability, his practice opens space for viewers to project their own memories and interpretations, creating deeply personal and ever shifting experiences within the work. --- Explore more of Mason Dowling's work here: Instagram:   / masondowling   Website: https://masondowling.com/ -- Filmed and produced by Timestamp - documenting artists, ideas, and creative lives around the world.
