During its trajectory, it traveled about 41.8 kilometers before fragmenting and exploding over Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts, releasing energy equivalent to 230 tons of TNT. The phenomenon was reported by residents of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Maine, who heard a loud explosion and felt vibrations in homes and buildings. Authorities ruled out seismic activity after the U.S. Geological Survey detected no tectonic movements in the area. NASA explained that it was a "fireball" or daytime bolide, a particularly bright type of meteor that disintegrates upon entering Earth's atmosphere.
