Marjane Satrapi, the acclaimed French-Iranian artist, filmmaker, and graphic novelist who transformed her experience of the Islamic Revolution in Iran into a global cultural phenomenon with her work Persepolis, has died at the age of 56. According to a statement released by her family, the artist died of "sadness," just over a year after the death of her husband, Swedish actor and producer Mattias Ripa, whom she considered the love of her life. The news has shocked the cultural world not only because of the magnitude of her work but also because of the tragic circumstances of her passing. Ripa died in April 2025, and in the weeks leading up to her own death, Satrapi had posted a series of messages on her Instagram account that spelled out the phrase: "Because I lost the love of my life."
