Sigmund Schlomo Freud (1856 – 1939; born Sigismund, but changed his first name in 1878) was a neurologist and psychiatrist who created psychoanalysis. Freud was born into a Jewish family in Freiberg in Mähren, at the time part of the Austrian Empire (currently, the locality is called Příbor and belongs to the Czech Republic). Freud began his studies using hypnosis to treat patients with hysteria, as a way to access their mental contents. Observing the improvement of patients treated by the French physician Charcot, he developed the hypothesis that the cause of hysteria was psychological, not organic. This hypothesis served as the basis for other concepts developed by Freud, such as that of the unconscious. Freud is also known for his theories of the Oedipus complex and psychological repression, and for establishing the clinical use of psychoanalysis as a treatment for psychopathology through listening to the patient. Freud believed that sexual desire was the primary motivational energy of human life. His work gave rise to a new understanding of the human being as an animal endowed with imperfect reason and influenced by its desires and feelings. According to Freud, the contradiction between these impulses and life in society generates psychic torment in the human being. Freud had a biopsychosocial view of the human being. Events such as Josef Breuer's description of patients cured through dialogue and the death of his colleague Ernst von Fleischl-Marxow from an overdose of the antidepressant of the time, cocaine, led him to abandon hypnosis and drug techniques to create a new method: the talking cure, that is, psychoanalysis, which used dream interpretation and free association as ways to access the unconscious. His theories and treatments were controversial in 19th-century Vienna, and continue to be widely debated today. His theory is highly influential in current psychology and continues to develop through studies and clinical practice in the field, with psychoanalysts who came after him. These have created their own theories, but always based on the intrinsic assumptions put forth by Freud, such as the notion of the unconscious and transference.
