"Exploring Modern Architecture in Yamaguchi" is a tour of Yamaguchi Prefecture's precious architectural heritage. First-class architect Masahiko Harada, who is knowledgeable about modern architecture in the prefecture, will explain the charm of each building. We will introduce "Shikairo" in Kaminoseki Town, Yamaguchi Prefecture. This building was built over 140 years ago and is known as one of the rare modern buildings in the country. We will explore the exterior and interior of Shikairo in detail. While touching on the history of the building, we will approach its features and surprises. Shikairo was built by Ogata Kenkuro, who was in the shipping business. At the time, Murozu was a key maritime traffic point with many ships passing through, and this building was built as part of that. Another feature of Shikairo is that it incorporates Western pseudo-Western architectural elements. Reflecting the yearning for and desire to explore the West as a result of the Meiji Restoration, the building is decorated with unique patterns and trowel paintings inside and out. In particular, the stained glass on the fourth floor is made of French colored glass and depicts beautiful geometric patterns.
