Talkernate History - Gabriel Over The White House
Gabriel Over the White House is one of the strangest films we’ve ever seen. And what a film it is! The year is 1932. President Judson Hammond suffers a serious brain injury and has returned from death’s door with an almost religious conviction to end the Great Depression. What are his methods? Well, the Legislature, Judiciary, and Constitution are definitely not involved. America’s democratic traditions are a mere speed-bump to be overcome for this President. Dictatorship is the order of the day. The next step is mass nationalization of industry, and roving bands of death squads eliminating enemies of the state. But, why is President Hammond doing this? What inspired him to take these bold measures? Could he be possessed by the Angel Gabriel?!? Or could it merely be the spirit of Abraham Lincoln? The possibilities are endless. The movie doesn’t give us a definitive answer. But what is definitive, is that if you try selling liquor in this country outside of the federal liquor dispensary system, your amalgamated warehouse is going to get visited by tiny armored cars.
