She entered Franklin Roosevelt's life in 1920 as a 24-year-old secretary on his vice-presidential campaign and never left it, accompanying him through his polio diagnosis, the 110-week recovery aboard the houseboat Larooco, the Albany governorship, and into the White House in 1933. She lived in a private third-floor suite that no other non-family member was permitted to occupy, presided over the President's evening Children's Hour cocktail tray, and was the only person in the West Wing whose office door opened directly into his. She held power of attorney over his personal finances, signed his checks, decided which calls reached the residence at night, and was described by Roosevelt biographer Jean Edward Smith as the woman the President himself called his conscience. On June 4, 1941, at age 44, she collapsed at a White House staff dinner, suffered a major stroke two weeks later, and never worked another day in the West Wing — and the building she had personally helped create, the FDR Presidential Library, was dedicated less than a month afterward while she lay in a hospital bed. Eleanor Roosevelt later wrote of her with the line that has hung over historians ever since: "My Friend, Marguerite A. Le Hand."
