Catedral de sal de ZIPAQUIRÁ: un viaje a 180 metros de PROFUNIDAD. [EP 107] #colombia

They say there are places you should visit at least once in your life... for their beauty, their history, or for how they make you feel. And this new destination has a little bit of all of that. In this episode of Viajandoencarro, we depart from Nemocón towards Zipaquirá, traveling a short but inspiring route through the heart of Cundinamarca. Along the way, we make a stop in Cogua, a small town surrounded by mountains and forests, known as the green lung of the Bogotá Savannah. A place where nature still marks the rhythm of the days and where tranquility can be felt in every corner. From there, we continue towards Zipaquirá, a city that holds a fundamental part of Colombia's history in every stone. Its name, in the Muisca language, means "land of the lord of salt," and it couldn't be more apt: from this land sprang the wealth that gave rise to its development and its worldwide fame. But beyond the mineral, Zipaquirá is also a symbol of effort, identity, and pride. Not in vain, this is the birthplace of Tour de France champion Egan Bernal, a reflection of the fighting spirit of its people. Its colonial streets, Plaza de los Comuneros, and neoclassical architecture invite you to stroll leisurely, to pause, listen to its history, and enjoy the charm of simplicity. Because traveling isn't always about moving forward: sometimes it's about stopping to breathe, to be thankful, and to enjoy the simple pleasure of being. During our stay, we visited emblematic places such as the old train station, the Bicentennial Theater, and the diocesan seminary. Every corner holds a piece of the Zipaquirá soul, a living testimony to its past and present. But our tour doesn't end there. Before descending into the heart of the mountain, we dedicated a full day to Jaime Duque Park, located just 15 kilometers from Zipaquirá. At first glance, it looks like a theme park, but it's much more than that: it's a place created with purpose, where culture, education, and nature intertwine. Founded by Jaime Duque, a visionary Colombian pilot, this park was born as a tribute to the country and human values. Inside, there are monuments inspired by world history, a replica of the Taj Mahal, a zoo with rescued species, and a profound reflection on caring for the planet. During the peaceful train ride, we discovered stories, curiosities, and messages that invite us to look at life through different eyes. It's an ideal visit for families, especially if you're traveling with children, although if you're traveling as a couple, it may feel less essential. In any case, it's a place that surprises with its message and the passion with which it was created. And now, the most anticipated moment of the trip arrives. We head toward the place that draws all eyes: the majestic Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral, a spiritual and architectural gem unique in the world. Beneath this mountain, a sanctuary was carved, with faith and art, uniting human labor with the power of the earth. An underground temple that moves and amazes every visitor. The tour begins with the Stations of the Cross, a 400-meter gallery depicting the 14 Stations of Christ's Passion. But there are no traditional images here: it is the shapes of the crosses and the empty spaces that convey the weight of sacrifice and the hope of faith. The lighting highlights the reliefs carved in salt and transforms the space into a profound and moving inner journey. As you advance through the tunnels, you feel your soul descend, finding calm and reflection amid the living rock. Beyond its religious significance, the Salt Cathedral is a true work of art. Every corner demonstrates the talent of the miners and artists who transformed a mine into a sanctuary, a heritage that today amazes the entire world. For this reason, more than a visit, it is a spiritual experience, a reminder that true beauty isn't always on the surface: sometimes you have to descend to the heart of the earth to find it. We bid farewell to this place with hearts full of gratitude. The Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral is one of those wonders that leave their mark, that invite us to pause, admire, and be grateful. And we, who travel for a living, give thanks for this way of life that allows us the time—that treasure that cannot be bought—to calmly discover places as unique as this one. And so we continue, with the Parcerita ready, heading for new landscapes, new stories, and new emotions that we will share with you next Sunday. Because every destination teaches us something, and every kilometer traveled is another page in this great book we write on wheels.
