The Forgotten Ones of Oakwood Cemetery in High Point, North Carolina

During my visit to High Point, North Carolina, I had the honor of touring the historic “Colored Section” of Oakwood Memorial Cemetery with Phyllis Bridges, founder of Yalik’s Movement For the Culture. This sacred ground holds the stories of Black families, leaders, workers, and community builders who helped shape High Point but were often left out of the historical record. Cemeteries like Oakwood are more than burial grounds, they are archives of ancestry, resilience, segregation, survival, and legacy. Through her research, tours, and the book 'The Book of Ancestry: Forgotten Ones of Oakwood Cemetery', Phyllis Bridges helps preserve and share the stories of those buried here, ensuring they are remembered with dignity. This episode is a reminder that history is not always found in museums. Sometimes, it rests quietly beneath our feet, waiting for someone to speak the names again.
