'The cliff' was a word we heard a lot in the early part of the 2010s. Not because Mika Hakkinen was a fan of Cliff Richard, but because the F1 tyres of the time were basically limited to a set number of laps before they just lost all performance. And because that drop in performance was so big in one go instead of being gradual, that's why it was called the cliff. But it did spice up the 2012 season, even if there were allegations from Spanish message boards about the races being rigged (does the phrase brass neck translate) and the general feeling after a while that the tyres were influencing races towards the end of the season instead of the drivers.
