Gangsta Rap Era: The Story of Ruthless Records
The late 1980s hip hop world was marked by the rise of Ruthless Records who was founded by Eazy E and Jerry Heller in 1987. The release of N.W.A. Straight outta Compton album in 1988, sparked a lot of controversy and put the record label on the map. The group was formed by Eazy E, Dr.Dre, Ice Cube, Mc Ren, DJ Yella and Arabian Prince. This point marked the Rise of Ruthless & Gangsta Rap genre in the Hip Hop world. The The following years internal conflict within the record label ensued and Ice Cube would be the first to leave Ruthless Records due to claims that Jerry Heller was stealing money from the group. Dre would also leave Ruthless Records 2 years later after having the same issues with the record label. Ice Cube went solo and was successful, but Dre formed another record label with Suge Knight under the name Death Row Records. The following years it was Ruthless Records vs Death Row Records, several diss songs would be released from both sides,as tensions grew in the beef between the two sides. By 1995 both Ruthless and Death Row were making millions daily, but something unexpected happened. Eazy E was diagnosed with HIV and died of AIDS shortly after. Just before his death he fired Jerry Heller and wanted to reunite the group N.W.A. with Dre and Ice Cube, and also he married Tomica Woods on his death bed who ended up inheriting the record label Ruthless Records. After this Ruthless Records was never the same.
