Praised by some as the most honest form of self-expression hip-hop has ever seen, and criticized by others as a dark chapter filled with controversy, gangsta rap continues to divide opinion decades later. Emerging from the streets of Los Angeles in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it gave a voice to the voiceless showing realities that mainstream America often ignored. Politicans and media coverage which was mostly negative in the 90s gangsta rap scene condemned it, but it only backfired and boosted records sales. With the rise of Ruthless Records and Death Row Records and artists like Eazy E, Tupac Shakur, Dr.Dre, Snop Dogg the subgenre of of hip hop-gangsta rap flourished.
