Giuseppe Garibaldi — Come un uomo solo ha unito milioni di italiani | Documentario
In this documentary, we retrace the entire life of Giuseppe Garibaldi, from his birth in Nice in 1807 to his death on the island of Caprera in 1882. An in-depth historical journey through the wars, exiles, ocean crossings, and battles that made a young Ligurian sailor the undisputed protagonist of the Italian Risorgimento. The story begins with Garibaldi's youth on the Mediterranean coast, his travels to Constantinople, and his encounter with the revolutionary ideas of Giuseppe Mazzini and Young Italy. We follow his first exile in South America, where he participated in the Farrapos War in Brazil and the Uruguayan Civil War, founding the famous Red Shirt Legion in Montevideo. During those years, he met Anita Ribeiro, the woman who became his companion in life and battle. The documentary continues with Garibaldi's return to Europe during the revolutions of 1848, the defense of the Roman Republic, the tragic death of Anita, and his second exile in New York, the Pacific, and Australia. It analyzes in detail the Second War of Independence, the Plombières Agreement between Cavour and Napoleon III, and above all the legendary Expedition of the Thousand, with which Garibaldi conquered Sicily and southern Italy with just over a thousand volunteers. Ample space is dedicated to the birth of the Kingdom of Italy, the meeting at Teano with Victor Emmanuel II, the Third War of Independence against Austria, and the capture of Rome in 1870. The story concludes with the condottiero's final years: his participation in the Franco-Prussian War, his support for the Balkan independence movements, and his final retreat to Caprera. A documentary designed for those who wish to understand not only Garibaldi's biography, but also the historical, political, and social context that made Italian unification possible, a complex and contradictory process whose consequences are still felt today.
