Keeping the elbows and shoulders down are an important principle listed in the Tai Chi Classics, and I find that the two are closely connected. Although the shoulders can be independently raised, it is more often than not a result of the elbows raising by rotating outwards. The only equipment you need for this drill is a simple stick and some space to practice. This is one of my favorite drills for Tai Chi students of all levels to refine their skill.
