ADHS-Diagnose als Frau: Angelina fiel durchs Raster | reporter

🤯 ADHD – many people immediately think of the famous fidgety child. But adult women can also have ADHD. Like Angelina. She received her diagnosis six months ago. Lisa spends a day with her. ☝️ What is ADHD? #ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and affects at least 5% of all children and adolescents in Germany. For a long time, science assumed that ADHD ended in childhood. But adults can also have ADHD. How many adults have ADHD? Professional associations estimate that there are 2 million. There are indications that ADHD is often overlooked in girls and women because the condition and medications are often better researched in men. This is known as the gender health gap. How does ADHD manifest itself in adults? Those affected often experience mood swings, strong emotional reactions, and are disorganized. They sometimes suffer from concentration difficulties, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The Wender-Utah criteria were developed for diagnosing ADHD in adults: http://www.adhs-deutschland.de/Home/A... Where does ADHD come from? Research suggests that people with ADHD have a dopamine deficiency in their brains. The neurotransmitter dopamine helps us concentrate on tasks. What are the consequences? Many people with ADHD experience anxiety disorders, depression, or addictions. ADHD is only diagnosed when the symptoms significantly impair daily life. Many people recognize some of the characteristics, but only when there are significant impairments in daily life can a diagnosis of ADHD be made. What about Angelina? She has so-called high-functioning ADHD and can, for example, perform at a high level at work. However, in everyday life, she has problems organizing herself and concentrating. There are people with ADHD whose daily lives are even more severely restricted. On the other hand, Angelina also has a kind of superpower: hyperfocus. She can dedicate herself to a topic with intense concentration and motivation, achieving extraordinary results. Is ADHD an illness? Medically speaking, ADHD is a disorder, meaning it's an illness. However, Angelina and others prefer the term "syndrome" and speak of "neurodiversity." Neurodiversity refers to the fact that the brains of different people function differently. Our society, however, hardly takes this into account. What treatment options are available? There are people with mild ADHD who manage without treatment. Angelina found the impairments so severe that she tried medication. The medication compensates for the dopamine deficiency in the brain and is intended to help her focus better. She is also undergoing psychotherapy to better structure her daily life.
