Twenty-five years after May 23, 1992, the day of the Capaci massacre, the Morvillo and Falcone families are separating. Francesca Morvillo's mother and her brother, magistrate Alfredo Morvillo, recently appointed Prosecutor of Trapani, have left the "Giovanni Falcone and Francesca Morvillo" Foundation, withdrawing the name of their deceased relative. Maria Falcone, Giovanni's sister, is the Foundation's president. Alfredo Morvillo was its vice president. Initially, there were some secret misunderstandings between the two families, and then, more recently, the conflict became irreconcilable two years ago, on May 23, 2015, during the transfer of Giovanni Falcone's coffin from the Sant'Orsola cemetery, where he rested for 23 years with his wife, to the Basilica of San Domenico, the Pantheon of illustrious Sicilians, where Francesco Crispi and Ruggero Settimo are buried, among others. Giovanni was thus separated from Francesca, and this would have saddened her family. Today, following the Morvillos' resignation from the Foundation, Maria Falcone commented: "We regret what happened. For two years we have sought mediation to prevent the Morvillo family's decision, ratified by the board, to leave the Foundation. It was painful for us to move Giovanni from the tomb of Sant'Orsola to the Pantheon, but we did it so as not to forget the 1992 massacres. Judge Paolo Borsellino's children were also present at the unveiling of the plaque. The decision to move Giovanni to San Domenico wasn't our decision, but that of the entire board, including Alfredo Morvillo, who remained silent when we proposed it. Then Francesca's mother learned of the move from the newspapers, and since then the family has decided to leave the Foundation. I reiterate that all of this is painful for us, and I hope they will reconsider. We have always considered Giovanni and Francesca to be one. And the name of my brother's wife stands out on the plaque at the Pantheon alongside those of those who fell at Capaci and on Via D'Amelio." Alfredo Morvillo responded to Maria Falcone from a distance and in a calm tone, because—he emphasizes—"I have no intention of stirring up controversy." He stated: "Two people united in life and death found themselves divided in their memories. But our decision doesn't stem solely from the unwelcome transfer of Falcone's body to the church of San Domenico. The unease stems from afar, dating back to May 23, 2011, when during the speeches in the bunker courtroom in Palermo, Francesca's role alongside Giovanni, especially their shared life and civic commitment, were overshadowed, and not just on that occasion. And I wasn't allowed to speak on stage. I resigned in 2011, believing that the goal for which the Foundation was founded hadn't been achieved. My resignation wasn't discussed thanks to the mediation efforts of magistrate friends. I resubmitted it in 2015, after the transfer of Falcone's body, which was the classic straw that broke the camel's back."
