It was 5:58 PM on May 23, 1992, when an explosive charge composed of TNT, RDX, and ammonium nitrate blew up a section of the A29 highway toward Palermo, near the Capaci exit. Giovanni Brusca, known as "u verru," meaning "the pig" in Sicilian, activated the remote control after a moment's hesitation. Antonino Gioè, stationed with him, shouted, "Go! Go! Go!" but "u verru" had noticed something was wrong: the armored cars were not traveling at the expected speed. For a crucial fraction of a second, he hesitated: then he pressed the button. This is the reconstruction of the events that unfolded that fateful day when Giovani Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo, and the three men of his escort, Antonio Montinaro, Vito Schifani, and Rocco Dicillo, lost their lives.
