How to Build a Self-Sustaining Jar Ecosystem

In this video, I explain step by step how to create a jar ecosystem from scratch: choosing the right container, collecting natural substrate, adding water sources, introducing algae and plants, and setting up proper lighting and temperature for long-term stability. I built three real self-sustaining jar ecosystems using river water, rainwater, and a storm drain. What appeared inside over time shows how complex life develops in closed aquatic systems. Each jar comes from a completely different environment: a river, a rain puddle, and a storm drain. Over time, they evolve differently, developing unique microfauna, aquatic snails, aquatic worms, and microscopic organisms like koh-puh-pods and ostracods. You’ll also see how predators, larvae, and decomposers interact, and why some ecosystems collapse while others remain stable for months or even years.
