Edward Jenner and the Dawn of Immunology

Now that we are past the Renaissance and approaching a more modern era, it's time to quickly touch upon a major advancement in battling pathogens. Edward Jenner invented the smallpox vaccine, which was responsible for eradicating the single biggest killer in human history, the smallpox virus, from the face of the Earth. With the last case occurring in 1979, many children today have never even heard of smallpox, and therefore have no idea what a devastating scourge this virus was. It was responsible for the collapse of civilizations native to North and South America, and has killed at least a billion people throughout history. Let's learn about precisely how Jenner came up with his vaccine, and why it was so much better than variolation and other attempts at immunization that had previously been used.
