Black girls have been disproportionately punished in schools—and ultimately pushed out of school altogether—for years. But change is possible. What would it actually look like if schools really were places of healing? In this conversation, we talk with Dr. Monique Couvson, founder of the National Black Women's Justice Institute and author of “Sing A Rhythm, Dance A Blues: Liberatory Education for Black and Brown Girls.” She discusses how schools can move away from punishment and the forces that push Black girls out of school and into the juvenile and criminal legal system, and how we can, instead, transform schools into places that foster safety and healing and ultimately enable Black girls to thrive.
