TRIBUN-VIDEO.COM - A wave of student demonstrations from the People's Struggle Council Alliance began filling the National Monument (Monas) area in Central Jakarta on Friday afternoon (July 17, 2026). Although briefly held back by a police blockade around Jalan Merdeka Selatan, the protesters asserted that this movement was the beginning of a series of larger protests targeting the government. The protest's field coordinator, Annur, stated that the national demonstration deliberately targeted the Horse Statue area as a focal point. He explained that the location was chosen for a reason, but rather to shock the government. "The goal is to attract public attention," Annur said when met on the sidelines of the demonstration in the Monas area on Friday. The student from Jakarta State University (UNJ) revealed that the protesters had a major mission, which they described as an attempt to destabilize the current government's policies. He openly stated that the protest aimed to exert strong pressure or "destroy" the cabinet led by Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka. "This protest will continue in stages and will continue to disrupt the Prabowo-Gibran cabinet," Annur asserted. Annur acknowledged that their demands were fundamental and comprehensive, leading him to label them "utopian." "We have three demands. First, a complete overhaul of the state system. Second, saving Indonesian education, and finally, the sovereignty of civil society," he explained. Because of the fundamental nature of their demands, Annur ensured that the protesters would not stop at today's demonstration. "Our demands are indeed utopian, so this protest will continue in stages," he added. Hindered by Police Blockade Observations at the location revealed that as of 3:30 PM WIB, approximately 150 protesters were still unable to reach the main point at the Horse Statue. Police have blocked off the area near the National Monument (Monas) IRTI, citing the security of state institutions within the radius. "We can't go (to the Horse Statue) yet because the police have prohibited it," said Annur. Although the route to the planned route is completely closed, students stated that they will continue to negotiate and demand their right to express their aspirations at the designated point. "We will demand even more strongly that we must give speeches at the Horse Statue," he concluded. As of the time of this report, protesters were still arriving and gathering at the discussion point before beginning their speeches from the command vehicle.
