The film was originally scheduled to feature Pierre Taki, who was indicted on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act, and the film was completed after reshoots and replacements of his scenes. Matsuzaka expressed his gratitude with a deep emotion, saying, "Thanks to everyone's support and encouragement, we've made it to the completion screening. Thank you so much." The film is based on Yasuhide Saeki's "best-selling historical novel series of the Heisei era." After completing their shifts in Edo, Iwane (Matsuzaka) and his childhood friends Kobayashi Kotohira (Emoto Tasuku) and Kawade Shinnosuke (Sugino) return to the Bungo Sekimae Domain for the first time in three years. Kotohira's younger sister, Mai (Miyashita Kanako), is married to Shinnosuke, and Iwane is about to marry Kotohira and Mai's younger sister, Nao (Yoshine). Meanwhile, Shinnosuke hears rumors of Mai's infidelity and kills her. Enraged, Kotohira kills Shinnosuke, and Iwane is ordered to kill Kotohira.
