After completing their Edo duty, Iwane (Matsuzaka) and his childhood friends Kobayashi Kotohira (Emoto Tasuku) and Kawade Shinnosuke (Sugino) return to Sekimae Domain in Bungo Province for the first time in three years. Kotohira's younger sister, Mai (Kanako Miyashita), is married to Shinnosuke, and Iwane is about to marry Kotohira and Mai's younger sister, Nao (Yoshine). Meanwhile, Shinnosuke hears rumors that Mai has committed adultery and kills her. Enraged, Kotohira kills Shinnosuke, and Iwane is ordered to kill Kotohira.
