Today's episode features #blueberry and spring pruning rules! Pruning blueberries is essential, as not only does it age and reduce yield and productivity, but without proper shaping, it won't produce fruit buds in large quantities. We divide blueberry pruning into three stages: 1️⃣ Sanitary pruning 2️⃣ Formative pruning for harvest 3️⃣ Rejuvenation and thinning of the bush ☝️ Sanitary pruning involves removing dense, crossing shoots, as well as branches that have fallen to the ground. We also remove any broken or overwintered branches. ☝️ Formative pruning for harvest involves pruning young annual growth, meaning we cut back what grew last season. Typically, these are replacement shoots and twigs that don't have fruiting buds. The goal of pruning for harvest is to establish lateral branching, which will ultimately produce the following year's harvest. So, if a shoot grows in 2025, we won't harvest it until 2027—it takes two years for fruiting! So, the more we stimulate lateral branching with pruning, the more we harvest. 😉 ☝️ Bush rejuvenation and thinning: we leave only the youngest branches and those no older than four years. The rule for thinning the blueberry caste is to have a framework of 10-12 young branches, with three removed and three added annually. Therefore, if you've just planted a young blueberry seedling, spend the first three years building up the framework, and only then focus on harvesting.
