Hürtgenwald: Der vergessene Kampf um Hügel 232
In Part 1 of our new four-part documentary about the Hürtgen Forest, Albert Troisdorf and I show you the original sites of the fierce fighting around Harmich and Hill 232. The Hürtgen Forest is one of those places where history isn't just told – it's felt. We were there with Albert in Harmich and at Hill 232, right in the heart of an area where bitter fighting took place during World War II. What seems like a quiet forest today was then a scene of fear, artillery fire, destroyed positions, and heavy losses. This video is the first part of a four-part series about the fighting in this region. It quickly became clear that this topic couldn't be condensed into a short video. The footage, the on-site explanations, and the historical context have become so extensive that we had to divide the series into several longer parts. Otherwise, we wouldn't do justice to the story – and it would be almost impossible for you to grasp. In this first part, we'll take you to Harmich and Hill 232. Together with Albert, we'll visit the original sites and explore what happened here. We'll work not only with narratives but also with original images, historical photographs, and the terrain itself. This is precisely what makes this place so special: Standing today amidst trees, paths, and unassuming terrain edges, you suddenly understand why certain hills, wooded areas, or villages held such great significance back then. What might appear as just a small dot on a map could mean the difference between life and death for the soldiers stationed there. As an expert, Albert brings the events to life. He explains where the lines ran, why this particular area was so fiercely contested, and what role Harmich and Hill 232 played in the fighting. Through his explanations, a quiet patch of forest becomes a place where history comes alive. This series isn't about dry facts or purely military technology. The goal is to understand what really happened here – on-site, in the terrain, based on the traces, images, and memories that remain. This is Part 1 of 4. We begin in Harmich and at Hill 232 – the site of one of the many fierce battles in the Hürtgen Forest. ⏱️ CHAPTERS (TIMECODES): 00:00 - Intro & Arrival in the Hürtgen Forest 02:15 - The Strategic Location of Harmich 06:40 - Ascent to Hill 232 12:20 - Analysis of the Original Historical Footage on-site 18:50 - Albert's Conclusion & Outlook on Part 2 🔔 Subscribe to the channel: Do you enjoy historical documentaries from the region and don't want to miss Parts 2 through 4?
