Thanks to excavations in recent decades, we are beginning to gain a new, more complex and detailed picture of the origins of ancient Rus'. Was the "Road from the Varangians to the Greeks" not simply a waterway, but a complex trade route employing various modes of transport, with logistics hubs and shipyards for building river vessels? What new archaeological evidence suggests that the Scandinavians in Rus' were not only traders and robbers, but also farmers? Why are sopkas (large burial mounds) a marker of the fusion of the Norman and Slavic elites in the Volkhov River and Lake Ilmen region? We discuss the process of Slavic settlement in the northern territories of what would become Rus' with Ivan Igorevich Eremeev, PhD in history and senior researcher in the Department of Slavic-Finnish Archaeology at the Institute of the History of Material Cultures, Russian Academy of Sciences.
