Are We Changing What It Means to Be Human?| Human Enhancement and Transhumanism

This session explores the evolving question of what it means to be human in an age of rapid technological advancement: should we enhance the human being, and if so, to what extent? Drawing from both bioscience and Islamic intellectual traditions, the discussion examines developments such as genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, and biomedical enhancement. These advancements raise important ethical questions about identity, limits, and the future of the human condition, as human enhancement seeks to extend or improve human capabilities beyond natural boundaries. Through this interdisciplinary lens, students are encouraged to critically reflect on how emerging technologies challenge existing understandings of the human being, and how ethical and theological frameworks can guide responsible engagement with these innovations.
