لَعَلَّكَ بَٰخِعٌ نَّفْسَكَ أَلَّا يَكُونُوا۟ مُؤْمِنِينَ (My Messenger!) You will almost kill yourself because they do not believe! (Shuara 3) إِن نَّشَأْ نُنَزِّلْ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ ءَايَةً فَظَلَّتْ أَعْنَٰقُهُمْ لَهَا خَٰضِعِينَ If We wish, We can send down upon them a miracle from the sky, and they will bow down to it. (Shu'ara 4) These verses console the Prophet and the believers who were saddened by the polytheists' lack of faith in the Quran and their hostile attitude towards it (Al-Kahf 18:6; Al-Fatir 35:8). For the Prophet's duty is not to force them to believe, but to convey the Quran and show them the right path (An-Nahl 16:82). As stated in verse 4, if God had willed, He would have sent a miracle or a disaster to bring the disbelievers to faith, thus causing them to submit. However, such coercion is contrary to the wisdom of testing. God created the world, life, and death as a test. Success in this test depends on a person's free will and belief in and obedience to God. "Because they, the Meccans, will not believe, you, O Messenger of Muhammad, will literally kill yourself, slaughtering yourself out of sorrow. The word "Lealle" here means "to feel sorry for yourself." In other words, "Have mercy on yourself by alleviating this sorrow." "If We willed, We could send down upon them from heaven a clear miracle and a dazzling manifestation of Our power, and then their knowledge on this matter would become definitive knowledge, and they would inevitably possess it. However, We have decreed that this knowledge should be theoretically (through reason). "Their necks would bow down to it." Mujahid said: "Necks" here refers to their leaders. Nahhas said: The meaning of neck is a well-known fact in the language. For example, when one says, "A tribe from among the people has come to me," one means that their leaders and leaders have come to me. Qatadah said: "That is, if God had willed, He would have sent down a sign that they would have been forced to accept, and no one among them would have turned their necks away with the intention of committing a sin." These verses are related to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). (peace and blessings be upon him) consoles the unbelievers who do not believe in him and expresses how much he wants the unbelievers to believe. Servants are left free to believe or not. No one but Allah has the power to force them to believe. If Allah wishes, He will send a miracle and make the unbelievers submit willingly or unwillingly. However, Allah has not willed such a thing. This is contrary to leaving His servants to their own will.
